More about Unhurried
The pandemic revealed our unhealthy relationship with busyness. Some of us like to stay busy, rushing around, to prove our worth by our productivity. Some of us like to stay busy to avoid the discomfort of having to sit with ourselves. Many of us realized for the first time that the real busyness we feel isn’t in our schedules, but in our hearts. Though our social lives came to a stop, our minds and hearts were as hurried as ever. And when we have difficulty slowing our hearts and minds, we have difficulty hearing from God.
This season has impressed on me the need to approach the Bible in an unhurried way, slowly meditating on a verse or two, allowing God to use the passage to transform me into the person I was created to be. When we approach Scripture in this slow, unhurried way, we will experience God’s peace, love, and hope. We will better understand who we are and how God created us to live. We will learn to settle our minds and hearts, resting in God’s love, no matter how chaotic the world around us may be. And, perhaps most importantly, we will train ourselves to listen for God’s still, small voice.
This year has revealed to us that living an unhurried life has more to do with an inward peace than with an empty schedule. In these pages, I’ll invite you to slowly, meditatively read the Bible, pondering it from multiple angles, through various practices and exercises, all while listening for God’s still, small voice. There’s no need to rush here. You can take a deep breath and linger. Kick off your shoes, settle into your favorite chair, and enjoy some unhurried time with God.
